My record of building a CentOS 5.2 Linux server.

I decided to build a new server to replace my current Fedora 7 system.  I run several websites using Apache2 and a Cyrus-imap/Postfix mail server.  The Fedora server also act as my local DNS and DHCP servers.  I wanted to move all of these functions to the new CentOS server.  I addition I wanted to add a RAID 5 array using several used 250GB IDE drives I had available.

For the RAID controller I selected the HighPoint RocketRAID 464 PCI controller.  This provides four IDE interfaces supporting up to 8 IDE drives.  My initial configuration would be three 250 GB drives. HighPoint provides an Open Source drive download that is used to build the kernel module for either 2.4 or 2.6 linux kernels.

To build the driver I first installed CentOS 5.2 on the first IDE drive in a non-RAID mode.  Once the driver is build it is copied to a floppy disk so it can be used to reinstall CentOS on the RAID 5 array.

I followed these instructions by Frank DiPrete to install CentOS 5.2 on the RAID array.
